Advancing Your Career: How to Ask for a Promotion or Job Title Change with Confidence

Asking for a promotion can be a nerve-wracking experience, but it's an essential step in advancing your career. Here are some tips to help you ask for a promotion:

  1. Collect Data: Before requesting a promotion or a job title change, list your accomplishments, skills, and contributions to the organization. Make sure you can clearly articulate why you deserve a promotion.

  2. Assess and Research the Position/Title: Research the position you're interested in and get an understanding of the responsibilities, qualifications, and expectations. Be prepared to explain how your skills and experience align with the position's requirements.

  3. Schedule a Meeting: This can be scary, but YOU CAN DO IT! Schedule a meeting with your supervisor to discuss your interest in a promotion/title. Be clear about the purpose of the meeting and what you hope to accomplish. When you attend the meeting, start the conversation by sharing positive news or enthusiasm about the workplace, your current position, a recent goal you achieved, or their support. Starting a discussion on a positive note helps breaks the ice and eases any nerves you may feel.

  4. Be Confident and Assertive: Be confident and bold in requesting a promotion or job title change. Clearly articulate why you deserve a promotion or job title change. Be prepared to provide an overview of how your request aligns with the organization/university.
