Long before you are on the job market, it is important to prepare for the offer. Negotiating an academic/clinical position should never be an afterthought. In fact, wise negotiating requires education, planning, and practice. This interactive seminar will provide you with strategies to determine what to ask for and how to ask for what you need and want. You will also leave with recommendations concerning what you should do before, during, and after the job offer.

In this session, students discuss strategies to overcome challenges that are unique to the first-generation experience. Topics include time management, balancing family demands, staying on track, and creating a career-building experience during college/graduate school that will lead to diverse opportunities and job offers. This session also explores how to navigate imposter syndrome, isolation, professional/personal boundaries, and social-emotional wellness.  

Academic Entrepreneurship

Research to Innovation: Becoming an Academic Entrepreneur 

This workshop provides an overview of academic entrepreneurship. Topics for discussion include technology transfer, commercialization of academic research developing a consulting firm, and developing income streams beyond the academic setting. This workshop also helps participants to hone in on gifts and talents necessary for building a financial legacy. 

Diversity in S.T.E.M

Examining the Impact Diversity has on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics

This workshop discusses the impact diversity has on science, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics and the importance of academic success, cultural competence, and socio-political consciousness. This session provides an overview of how persons from a diverse background can obtain grants, funding, social support, mentoring, and training to become an independent leader in S.T.E.M. Additional workshop topics include developing an identity and vision and creating a research and funding portfolio.

Negotiation Training for Mentors and Faculty

The Science of Negotiations: A Guide for Mentors & Faculty Advisors

Mentors and faculty advisors play a critical role in supporting mentees/trainees during the job search. Mentors and faculty have the opportunity to help students, mentees/trainees refine negotiation skills. This interactive discussion will involve exploring key strategies necessary to mentor others about negotiations. We will also review what your mentee should do before, during, and after their academic/clinical job offer.
