Mastering the Art of Negotiation: Essential Tips for Success in Any Negotiation

Hopefully, you have read The ABC’s of Negotiating. If not, you want to pick the book up here. This children’s book (for adults) is a go-to resource for academics.

Applying for a faculty position at a college or university? Did you know there are many rules and guidelines that can help you successfully negotiate your academic position?

Here are 5 general tips to help you become a star negotiator.

1.      Create a list of wants and needs before the interview.

Why?

You need to quickly determine the gap between your desires and what the employer is offering.

2.      Know how you are aligned with the goals of the department, college, and university.

Why?

It is essential to create buy-in with your employer by reminding them how well you align with the departments’ values and goals.

3.      Ask questions to clarify the offer before asking for anything.

Why?

Clarifying the terms of the job offer allows you to make sure you understand the gap between your desires and what the employer is offering.

4.      Practice asking for your wants and needs.

Why?

We become good at asking questions when we practice. Practicing also helps us develop justifications on why meeting our needs is important.

5.      Work with a consultant, coach, mentor, or advisor who has a history of negotiating.

Why?

Negotiating is stressful. Asking for help with experienced individuals will inspire and challenge you to have conversations about your desires with employers.

If you do not have a trusted advisor or mentor, you can sign up for a 30-minute strategy call or one-on-one consultation. I also host live negotiation courses that will help you prepare before, during, and after the job offer. More information about the courses can be found here.
